Lockdown at McAllum High School lifted after no weapon found
The Central Austin high school went into lockdown just before 1:15 p.m. Wednesday after police received reports of a student with a weapon. No weapon was found and the lockdown was lifted about 40 minutes later.

State requests gag order in Norwood case
The Texas Attorney General's Office requested a Williamson County district judge consider a gag order in Mark Alan Norwood's case. The 57-year-old was arrested last year for the 1986 murder of Christine Morton. Morton's husband, Michael Morton, was wrongfully convicted of the crime, and spent nearly 25 years behind bars. Newly-tested DNA evidence exonerated Morton and led investigators to Norwood.

APD race relations questioned once more
On Feb. 10, local blogger and community activist Scott Henson was walking home with his 5-year-old granddaughter when he was apprehended by Austin police who thought he could be a kidnapping suspect. Henson alleged police roughness and racial profiling by APD, since he is white and his granddaughter is black. Tuesday, Chief Art Acevedo released dash cam footage of the incident which he believes proves his officers acted in the best interest of a potential child in danger.

Despite economic boost, no special session in sight for Texas schools
State budget cuts last session continue hinder schools all over Texas. Tuesday, officials with the state comptroller's office said it's likely the state will have more money in its Rainy Day Fund by August, as well as an extra $1.6 billion in other revenue, However, there is little desire from state lawmakers to call a special session to ease budget cuts.

Water woes weigh on LCRA
The LCRA board of directors is expected to accept a new water management plan Wednesday, following a two-day conference about changes the river authority plans to implement under the current drought conditions. Hundreds of rice farmers showed up to Tuesday's meeting, claiming the proposed plan could put them out of business.

City encourages smaller trash cans to boost recycling
Austin Resource Recovery wants to boost recycling by encouraging customers to downsize their trash cans. The city offers four different size cans, ranging from 21 gallons to 96 gallons. Families would save $6 a month if they switched from the most common can size to the smallest size available. In doing so, city leaders hope it would encourage Austinites to think twice before they throw something away.
